At the Jewish New Year, we are encouraged to eat pomegranates, a symbol of abundance. But we are also urged to eat only sweet things, as a symbol for our hope for a sweet year. Yet pomegranates are not sweet! The solution? To dab them with honey.
And so it is with our lives: we must take the abundance of life’s gifts – both the sour and the sweet – and transform them through our actions into sweetness.
May each of us find new ways to bring sweetness to the lives of those around us, especially those whose abundance seems tilted towards the sour.
