Did you know that one of the stories many Jews think is in the Torah is actually found in the Qu’ran? Or that the characters in Abraham’s sacrifice might have been different than you thought?

Come join us for two evenings of storytelling and discussion as we look what Islam and Judaism share, along with what distinguishes them from each other.

Dr. Elliott Bazzano, Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at Le Moyne College, and Maggid Jim Brulé will draw from the rich sacred and spiritual traditions of Islam and Judaism to lead a discussion of how similar values are interwoven through these ancient traditions.

Our first gathering will be at Temple Concord on August 26 at 7 pm. Light snacks will be served. A second event will take place October 15 at the Turkish Cultural Center, with a light meal beginning at 6 pm.

What is Maggidut?

Maggidut is the art of communicating spiritual meaning through stories.

Stories are the way we understand and communicate about our worlds, the spiritual and the secular. Stories allow us to create and share meaning in ways that “slip by” our intellectual censors and touch our deeper selves.

The Program

Friday evening: Services begin at 7:30. In true Makom Shalom style, the evening will be filled with music and ruach – and stories from the Maggid. Come welcome Shabbas with us, and set the tone for the rest of this week’s “world out of time.” At the Annex: RSVP for directions. (South Loop)

Saturday: Services begin at 10:30. We’ll have a chance to sing, pray, read and study Torah until lunchtime. Then join our Tish:  an afternoon of joyous feasting and study. Tales will be told, and instruction given in Maggidut: the art of telling deep stories. If you’ve wanted to learn to tell these stories – come and join us! Havdalah: We’ll close Shabbas about six with a special Havdalah service, combining the beauty of the traditional service with a rich story. Once the service is concluded, we’ll adjourn to a pot luck dinner; RSVP for directions. (West Rogers Park)
